Star Wars Is Being Taken Too Seriously

In my personal opinion, Star Wars was a movie that was created for purely entertainment purposes. I agree with the article that we read yesterday but not in such an extreme sense. I think that the writers of Star Wars were searching for a deeper meaning behind the movie when there really wasn't one intended originally. I think that the article may have been a little harsh. That being said, I think that much of what he was saying could be true. There is a desire among many to rationalize why a movie so silly could have such a great effect on the world, which is why there are various "deeper" meanings behind the film that have been created. We may never really know what the true intention behind Star Wars was, but in my opinion it was created as a blockbuster film that just so happened to  be a major hit.

  1. I agree with you Neve. I think Star Wars was just a fun, and innovative movie purely for entertainment. Not a deeper message that your father will be your biggest enemy in the end…. etc. I think Star Wars was created because it really was a blockbuster hit, and was fun and different. The problem is that I think people need to make a deeper meaning as if needing to condone the fact why you enjoy the movie so much. Some people don't want to simply enjoy a movie, but would rather to excuse their likings for a deeper meaning then 'just' a fun film. Just like Big Hero Six, people have made deeper meanings to the movie, where in my opinion, it was just a fun film.

  2. I agree. I think that Star Wars was orgininally made for entertainment purposes. However, if you analyze it, there are some aspects that can definitely have a more serious outtake to it. I believe that the article we read did have a couple good points. The main one being that Luke doesn't use the force to hold back the crushing walls therefore it cannot be the belly of the whale since Luke does not discover or even use his powers at all in this scene.

  3. I completely agree with you. Star Wars revolutionized the movie industry in several ways, but I believe it was simply made for entertainment purposes rather than some deeper reflection of our culture. The film created an entirely new universe for viewers to immerse themselves in. People did not come to see the movie so they could sit there and evaluate their own personal morals and values. When people try to look for a deeper meaning, the films lose their fun side and become simply a subject of study. aka no fun.

  4. I strongly disagreed with the article. I thought it was pretty harsh and biased. I think that overall, the Star Wars series tells a great story and does a good job of doing so. At one specific point in the article, the author says that Obi-Wans advice to Luke is "unhelpful" but really Luke has a hard time letting go and using the force and trusting himself at first. Once he "trusts his instincts" he become very powerful.

  5. I agree with you. This article was very harsh towards the movie. Although corny, the movie did a good job of telling a story. As more time elapses people will not appreciate it as they did when it was first released in 1977. Still the movie was purposely made for entertainment purposes but was viewed on such a deeper level and therefore took all the enjoyment away from it.

  6. I agree with you as well. Star Wars was a film during its time different from any other movie or novel during that time. Campbell was attempting to make something, out of the ordinary, unique and a movie which would grab attention. I believe the author of Galactic Gasbag, was to harsh, even if he was a fan, he really bashed the film. Also I believe every film or movie writer usually feels the need to have a story for each individual character to justify the actions they make, and that is where Campbell went wrong. He created to many back stories and made it to complicated i would say. Star Wars should just be taken for what it was first meant to be.
