Initial thoughts on watchmen

My first opinion on Watchmen was the corniness of Rorschach's diary. He only uses short punch lines in his diary and I love it. Even with the corniness he does a great job of displaying the depression and dirtiness of the city. The idea of superheroes has not taken a perspective like this before, which has led me to think more intensely about the dark side of heroes. The world these heroes live in is dark and depressing. Rorschach embraces this darkness while the other heroes that retired somewhat turned away from it. I also think that it's interesting that the ink blots on Rorschach's mask changes every pane. I feel like their is much more to that later in the book. I am also excited to see the flashbacks to when the Minutemen were together to fight crime. The writings and illustrations are amazing and have the perfect way to reflect each other. As I read on, I feel like their will be explanations and description that will help me with this book.

  1. Watchmen Initial Thoughts:
From the amazing detailed drawings to the dark characters like Rorschach, I have become very interested in this comic book. The way the book starts out is very depressing as Rorschach’s diary talks about the public’s immorality and we see the first bloody murder of a superhero. As we are introduced to creative characters like Rorschach, who wears a mask that changes every scene and the blue guy, yes a blue guy who doesn't wear any clothes, it is apparent that there is a lot of back story that needs to be explained and will be eventually as you continue reading the book. Like we discussed in class, the artwork does so much of the storytelling and character developing on its own. In a scene we see Rorschach eating candy and a couple pages later, while talking with Laurie Juspeczyk, we see Laurie pick up the trash he’s dropped. It’s little things like that that the author weaves into the drawings that when you notice, make the comic book so epic because its so detailed. Just as detailed are it’s characters. Why does Rorschach wear a mask? Why is the blue man blue? And apparently there is some romance between the blue man and Laurie because she needs to explain why she can go out to dinner with an old friend to him. Overall, as someone who truly appreciates well developed, complex characters in a novel and is a huge fan of thrilling mysteries, I am really interested in this comic book. I have never seen anything quite like it and look forward to reading and rereading it again to discover new details I hadn’t noticed before.
