Luke's Reaction

I found it kind of odd how Luke reacted to the death of his aunt and uncle. He seems to casually go about his day and doesn't seem that upset. Since he was supposed to live with his aunt and uncle for another year, this is life altering for him. He then has to go to Alderon and help Obi Wan restore peace in the galaxy. Is this an odd reaction or is it heroic of Luke to remain calm and go about helping Obi Wan?

  1. I feel as though his reaction to seeing his aunt and uncles skeletons burning in front of their house is slightly unrealistic, but it keeps the story moving along and allows Luke to begin on this adventure he has always dreamed about. Although I would not necessarily call this a heroic act, because it was mainly for personal freedom, it is what begins his quest, a necessary part to our heroes journey.

  2. I agree with Maddie on this topic. I don't think that it is really realistic for Luke to move on as nothing bad has happened. I do think that the death of his aunt and uncle provided him with motivation to go about helping Obi Wan. I also think that the point of the movie would be completely different had they focused on Luke mourning for days. I think that it is almost imperative that they play down Luke's reaction to the death of his family for the movie's purpose.

  3. In my own opinion, I know that some people deal with death differently, and maybe not 'feeling' anything after his aunt and uncle's death was easiest for him. As he continues to go on with his life, he gets in more drama then he thought he ever would trying to save the galaxy. Although the death of his aunt and uncle may have been just a transition for the movie's plot for Luke to find Obi Wan, you could argue that Luke's (lack of) emotions of death played a huge role in the plot, and pushes him likewise to what neve said, motivation. But this motivation isn't always a positive motivation. Another word describing his actions of anger and being a 'brat' could be out of revenge. Maybe why Luke is so motivated to kill evil.

  4. Just like how the princess quickly recovers from her entire home planet being blown to space dust, Luke moves on fairly quickly after he sees his aunt and uncle dead. While I feel like both reactions are unrealistic, I do agree with others that it is necessary to move on with the story.

  5. I believe that he Luke had great trust in Obi Wan, From the first time Luke and Obi meet it seems as if he grows great trust in him. Luke realizes Obi is very knowledgeable, important because of the message R2 keeps repeating and recognizes that Obi is the only one he can probably trust when his Aunt and Uncle are killed. And the moment when Luke sees them dead, I believe he is to shocked and confused to have a reaction and after there death he acts to be so wrapped up in what he is learning and the mission that is occurring that the death of his aunt and uncle is not as important.

  7. This reaction is rather unrealistic, much like Leah's to Alderon's destruction, but it kind of helps the story move and not lose sight of the next step. Lucas kind of just does it, walks away and cleans his hands of it before moving on to the next sequence of events.
