Watchmen Essay Topic: 9/11 v. Veidt's Alien Attack
One of my ideas for an essay topic is comparing the world of Watchmen after Veidt's alien squid attacks New York with real New York City after the attacks of 9/11. It would be really interesting because both of these attacks unified the city/country/world, but they had opposite effects in the long term. In Watchmen, the alien attack prevented World War III and nuclear Armageddon, while 9/11 was the catalyst for our war in Iraq.

I had been thinking about this idea while we were reading. It is such an obvious connection to make, yet it is truly quite interesting. There are so many ways to unite a group of people, but none work nearly as well as tragedy. It would be interesting to explore the reasoning behind this and make the connections that are eerily on point with the 9/11 attacks.
ReplyDeleteI also think this would be a good topic for essay discussion. It might be an uncomfortable for some people, so it shouldn't be the only topic, but it would spark a great discussion by those who find the connection to be important.
